In Lapp mythology, Leib-Olmai was the god of good luck in hunting. He lived in alder trees, but when hunters danced for him he appeared as a bear and gave them good luck - especially against bears. At festivals, people painted their faces in his honour with a brownish-red mixture made from ground-up alderbark and water. Research Leib-Olmai
