ASPARAGUS

Asparagus (Asparagus officindlis) is a plant of the order Liliaceae, the young shoots of which, cut as they are emerging from the ground, are a favourite culinary vegetable. In Greece, and especially in the southern steppes of Russia and Poland, it is found in profusion; and its edible qualities were esteemed by the ancients. It grows wild in some parts of England, but does not attain nearly to the size of the cultivated plant. It is usually raised from seed; and the plants should remain three years in the ground before they are cut; after which, for several years, they will continue to afford a regular annual supply. The beds are protected by straw or litter in winter. Its diuretic properties are ascribed to the presence of a crystalline substance found also in the potato, lettuce, etc.

COMPOSITAE

Compositae is the largest known family of plants containing over 23,000 species of herbs or shrubs found all over the world. The flowers (generally called florets) are numerous (with few exceptions) and sessile, forming a close head on the dilated top of the receptacle, and surrounded by an involucre of whorled bracts. The flowers are monopetalous, and the order is divided into three natural groups from the form of the corolla: (1) Tubuliflorae, in which it is tubular, with five, rarely four, teeth; (2) Labiatiflorae, in which it is divided into two lips; and (3) Liguliflorae, in which it is slit or ligulate. The stamens are inserted on the corolla, and their anthers are united into a tube (syngenesious). The style is two-cleft at the apex. The fruit is dry and seed-like. The head of numerous florets was called by the older botanists a compound flower, hence the name. Many are common weeds, like the daisy, dandelion, thistle, etc; many are cultivated in gardens, such as the asters, marigold, etc; others have some economic or medicinal value, as chicory, artichoke, chamomile, lettuce, wormwood, arnica, etc.

Corn Salad (lamb's-lettuce, Valerianella olitoria) is a plant of the family Valerianaceae native to Britain and Europe. It is a weak succulent herb which grows to about 25cm tall and is used as a salad in early spring.

GREAT LETTUCE

Great lettuce (Lactuca virosa) or greater prickly lettuce or wild lettuce as it is also known is a highly poisonous, narcotic, annual, sometimes biennial herb of the family Compositae with an erect leafy, white or reddish stem which branches at the top. The leaves are stiff, bluish-green in colour and have prickly toothed margins and a prickly midrib beneath. The basal leaves are stalked, oval and arranged in a rosette. The stem leaves are alternate, clasp the stem at their base and are held horizontally. The flowers are numerous, short-stalked and yellow. Great lettuce was formerly used as a narcotic before opium was discovered, and is still used to adulterate opium.

LETTUCE

Lettuce is a popular name for members of the herbaceous genus Lactuca, of the family Asteraceae, family Compositae, particularly the garden lettuce, (Lactuca sativa). The genus is native to temperate regions of Eurasia and North America. The flowers, borne in panicled heads, produce feathered fruits called achenes. European wild, or prickly lettuce, (Lactuca scariola), is widely distributed throughout Europe and naturalized in the north-eastern USA. It has a slightly prickly stem, and the leaves have soft-prickled margins. European wild lettuce is thought by most botanists to be the parent species of garden lettuce. American wild lettuce, or horseweed, (Lactuca canadensis), is a smoother, leafier plant, native to temperate North America; it is common in thickets and damp borders of fields.
