The term Louis heel was first applied during the reign of Louis XIV to a type of sole and heel made in one section. During the 19th century the term was applied to a thick, often covered heel, which is tapered at the mid- section before flattening outward, this type of heel first being worn during the reign of Louis XV in the 18th century.
