X CLUB

The X Club was a private British dining club of scientists which met from 1864 to 1892. The X Club was comprised of Joseph Hooker the botanist; T H Huxley a biologist; John Tyndall, a physicist; John Lubbock, a banker, ethnologist, and entomologist; William Spottiswoode, the Queen's Printer and an amateur mathematician; Edward Frankland, a chemist; George Busk, a retired surgeon, comparative anatomist, and microscopist; T A Hirst, a mathematician; and Herbert Spencer, a sociologist and philosopher of evolution.

JOHN LUBBOCK

John Lubbock (first Baron Avebury) was an English banker and naturalist. He was born in 1834 at London and died in 1912. Educated at Eaton he entered the banking firm of Robarts, Lubbock and Company in 1848 and succeeded his father as head of the firm in 1865. From 1870 until 1880 he was Liberal member of parliament for Maidstone and from 1880 until 1900 member for London University, sitting as a Liberal-Unionist from 1885 until 1900. In 1900 he was raised to the peerage as the first Baron Avebury. He was responsible for the 1881 Bank Holidays Act, and was also instrumental in the 1886 Shop Hours Regulation Act and the 1904 Bill of Exchange Act.

EARLY CLOSING ASSOCIATION

The Early Closing Association was established in 1842 to abridge the hours of labour, and to abolish Sunday trading. In 1888 a bill raised by Sir John Lubbock calling for shops to close at 8 pm and 10 pm on Saturday's was rejected by the commons. In 1904 the Shop Hours Act provided for the early closing of shops by 'closing order' under the local authority.
