PALINURUS

In Roman mythology, Palinurus was the pilot of AEneas on his voyage from Troy to Italy. He was said to have fallen into the sea off the coast of Lucania.

The Lucania was a mail steamer of the Cunard Line. She was built in 1893, had a displacement of 12950 tons and was 610 feet long and had a top speed of 22 knots.

VELIA

Velia or Elia was an ancient Greek colony on the west coast of Lucania, southern Italy. It was founded by Phocaeans from Corsica in the 6th century BC, and is chiefly known as the name-place of the Eleatio school of philosophy. There are remains of the town at Castellammare della Brucca. Velia was also the name of a hill between the Palatine and the Esquiline, surmounted by the triumphal arch of Titus.
