Gilolo or Jilolo is an island in Indonesia, the largest of the Maluku islands with an area of about 6500 square miles. It is of singular form, consisting of four peninsulas, radiating north, north-east, east, south-east, and south, from a common centre, and having large bays between. It is rugged and mountainous, the mountains being volcanic. The principal productions were traditionally sago, coconuts, spices, fruits, edible birds'-nests, useful timber, etc; and the island was renowned for the horses, cattle, and sheep, deer, wild boars, and other game which abounded. The original inhabitants, called Alfoories, were, by the startr of the 20th century, gradually pressed into the interior of the island by the arrival of Malays. Research Gilolo
