ATLANTIC COWNOSE RAY

The Atlantic Cownose Ray (Rhinoptera bonasus) is a fish of the family Rhinopteridae with wide and falcate pectoral fins about 210 cm wide from edge to edge, a bulbous head with a concave leading edge resembling a cow's nose, a single dorsal fin present at the base of the tail which is long and whipl-ike. The dorsum is generally a mid to dark brown colour, the ventrum pale with dusky pectoral fin tips. Atlantic cownosed rays are to be found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean from Mauritania, Senegal, and Guinea to the western Atlantic Ocean from New England to Brazil, where they swim singulary or in schools using their pectoral fins to stir-up the sediment and find ,olluscs and crustaceans to eat.

CLAUDIUS I

Claudius I (Tiberius Claudius Drusus Nero Germanicus) was a Roman emperor. He was born in 10 BC at Lyons and died in 54. The son of Claudius Drusus Nero, stepson of Augustus and Antonia, the daughter of Augustus's sister he lived in privacy, occupying himself with literature, the composition of a Roman history, and other works, until the murder of Caligula, when he was dragged from, his hiding - place and proclaimed emperor in 41 AD. The early years of his reign were marked by the restoration of the exiles, the embellishment of Rome, the addition of Mauritania to the Roman provinces, and successes in Germany and Britain. But latterly he became debauched, left the government to his wives, and in particular to Messalina, who with his freedmen committed the greatest enormities. He was poisoned by his fourth wife, Agrippina so that her son, Nero could be emperor.

MAURITANIA

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a country in north-west Africa. It has a total area of 1,030, 700 km2. The climate is desert; constantly hot, dry and dusty. The terrain is comprosed mostly barren, flat plains of the Sahara with some central hills. Natural resources are iron ore, gypsum, fish, copper and phosphate. The religion is nearly 100% Muslim. The official language is Hasaniya Arabic, with Toucouleur, Fula, Sarakole and Wolof also spoken
Mauritania was originally an area of the Sahara inhabited by the Mauri people, and was named by the Romans when they took the area. During the 7th century the area came under the rule of Ghana and in 1920 became part of French West Africa. Mauritania achieved self-government in 1958 and full independence in 1960.

WESTERN SAHARA

The Democratic Arab republic of Sahara, popularly known as Western Sahara is a country in north Africa. It has a total area of 266, 000 km2. The climate is hot, dry desert; rain is rare; cold offshore currents produce fog and heavy dew. The terrain is mostly low, flat desert with large areas of rocky or sandy surfaces rising to small mountains in south and north-east. Natural resources are phosphates, iron ore. The religion is Muslim. The language is Hassaniya Arabic, Moroccan Arabic and Spanish.
The Western Sahara was a formerly called Spanish Sahara and was an overseas province of Spain from 1958 until 1976 when Spain withdrew and the area was distributed between Morocco and Mauritania. In 1976 the Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguia el Hamra and Rio de Oro (POLISARIO) declared an independent republic and entered into a war with Morocco. Wetsren Sahara was amitted to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1982 and a ceasefire was agreed in 1991, with the United Nations brokering talks between Morocco and the indigenous Sahrawis population.
