Spirits is a general term for alcoholic liquors above a certain strength. The term is not restricted to alcoholic beverages, but also includes industrial alcohols such as methylated spirits.

French polish is a spirit varnish comprised of shellac dissolved in methylated spirits sometimes with other spirit-soluble gums added, used for giving a smooth surface-coating to furniture and cabinet-work. These varnishes are sometimes coloured to modify the character of the wood. A reddish tinge is imparted by dragon's-blood or red sanders-wood, and a yellowish tinge by gamboge or turmeric-root.

Methylated spirits is alcohol prepared for industrial use. In the painting trade Methylated spirits are used as a solvent for shellac in knotting, spirit varnishes and French polish. Mineralised Methylated spirits consists of 90% ethyl alcohol with 10% wood naptha added and a small quantity of mineral naptha added to make it taste unpleasant. Methylated spirits are a clear, colourless substance and so methyl violet is often added giving the characteristic purple colour.
