Research Results For 'National Sporting Club'

FRANK SLAVIN

Frank Patrick Slavin was a British boxer. He was born in 1862 at New South Wales. A professional boxer, between 1885 and 1891 he beat Tom Burke, Mic Dooley, Chesterfield Goode, Jim Young, Joe McAuliffe and Jake Kilrain. In 1889 he drew in a contest with Jem Smith at Bruges. In 1892 he was knocked out by Peter Jackson in the tenth round of a contest at the National Sporting Club.

LONSDALE BELTS

Lonsdale Belts are boxing awards for British champions. They were created in 1909 when the Earl of Lonsdale presented a belt to Welsh for winning the British lightweight title at the National Sporting Club, of which Lord Lonsdale was president.

NATIONAL SPORTING CLUB

The National Sporting Club was a private club opened in Covent Garden, London, in 1891 and which did much to promote boxing with gloves in Britain. In 1955 the club moved to the Cafe Royal in Regent Street, London.
