GRINDING

Grinding is a mechanical process in which certain effects are produced by attrition. This process prevails in various mechanical arts, as in grinding corn, etc, the object of which is to reduce the materials to a fine powder; or in grinding metals for the purpose of giving them a certain figure, polish, or edge. In the first case the grinding or crushing is effected by rough stones, or, as in crushing ores, between heavy metal cylinders, or by a heavy stone or iron cylinder revolving upon a smooth plate. The grinding of cutlery is effected by means of the grindstone; emery powder grinds glass lenses and specula. Ornamental glass is ground into facets by stones and lap-wheels. Diamonds and other precious stones are ground with diamond dust.

What is called dry grinding is the grinding of steel with dry grindstones. The points of needles are produced by this means, also the finishing of steel pens. Sand-jet grinding is a process in which abrasion is effected by the percussion of small hard particles on a plain surface, sharp siliceous sand being impelled by a blast artificially produced of steam or of air. By the use of flexible jointed connecting tubes the jet can be turned in any direction.

Picture of Yew

The yew (Taxus) is a genus of evergreen trees of the family taxaceae. The Yew has an irregular and twisted trunk that bears a purplish-brown bark. The wood is tough and resilient, helping to resist rotting. Its needles, which are flat and flexible, are dark green on top and light green underneath. They also arch downward and have two white bands on the bottom side of their needles. It was sacred to the ancient pagan religion of Britain.

THE PRATS

The Prats were a social club of practical jokers which met and practised their art at the Humble Plumb public house in Bitterne, Southampton for several years at the end of the 20th century. Each year, the group elected a leader, who was then crowned 'King Prat' for the year. The group met in a specific corner of the public bar, an area known as 'Prat's Corner' and held lunches as well as conducting a campaign of practical jokes, one of the most famous being the artificial christmas tree pine needles gag - each year the landlord of the pub erected an artificial christmas tree. One year the Prats decided to each bring in some real pine needles, and secretly spread them around the floor under the artificial christmas tree, as though the tree had shed real pine needles like a real christmas tree would. A select group of friends, they became known as the prats after one disgruntled regular customer at the pub, fed up with being refused membership of the club was heard to describe the group (not unfairly as it happens) as 'a bunch of supercilious prats'. The name stuck and was adopted as the club title.
