In Greek mythology, Arethusa was a daughter of Nereus and Doris. She was a nymph changed by Artemis into a fountain to enable her to escape the pursuit of Alpheus.

The Nereus was a Greek Glavkos Class submarine of 718 tons displacement launched in 1927. The Nereus was powered by two sets of 2-cycle Sulzer diesel engines providing a top speed of 14 knots surfaced and 9.5 knots submerged and a maximum range of 6400 km and a diving depth of 45 fathoms. She carried a complement of 41 and was armed with one 3.9 inch gun; one 3 pdr anti-aircraft gun and eight 21 inch torpedo tubes, six in the bow and two in the stern.
