The cassowary (Casuaridae) are a family of ruminating birds of the order Casuariformes. They are similar to the ostrich, but have characteristic feet with three toes, the inner toe possessing a long sharp claw, unusually strong legs, a bare head and neck and a helmet on the head which is larger on the male than the female. The Papuan are natives to or inhabitants of Papua New Guinea; a speaker of any of various Papuan languages, used mainly on the island of New Guinea, although some 500 are used in New Britain, the Solomon Islands, and the islands of the south-west Pacific. In 1779, a British force and fleet under McNeill and Mowatt held possession of what is now known as the Castinepeninsula, in Maine, USA. An expedition was sent from Boston to dislodge them. This failed and as a result the British endeavored the next year to erect Maine into a province under the name of New Ireland. Research New Ireland
