In 1789 the Spaniards seized a number of British vessels in Nootka Sound, in what was then called California, on the ground that they were intruding on Spanish possessions. War nearly resulted. But by the provisions of the so-called Nootka Convention, held on October the 28th, 1790, England and Spain agreed to trade along the coast side by side, respecting each other's settlements.

The Nootka was a Canadian trawler of 460 tons displacement launched in 1938 and employed as a minesweeper during the Second World War. The Nootka carried a complement of 33 and had a top speed of 12.5 knots. She was armed with one 4-inch gun.

HMCS Nootka was a British-built Canadian Tribal Class destroyer of 1927 tons displacement launched in 1944. HMCS Nootka was powered by three Admiralty 3-drum type boilers providing a top speed of 36.5 knots and carried a complement of 240. She was armed with eight 4 inch dual-purpose guns; ten 20 mm Oerlikon anti-aircraft guns and four 21 inch torpedo tubes.
