The oriflamme was the ancient royal banner of France; originally the banner of the abbey of St Denis, near Paris, which received many important grants from the early French kings. Its colour was purple with a tinge of azure and gold. It became the banner of the monarchy in the reign of Philip I. The oriflamme borne at Agincourt was, according to Sir Nicolas, a rectangular red flag, split into five points.
