AKHAL-TEKE

The Akhal-Teke is a Turkmenistan breed of light horse, originating around 1000 BC or before. The Akhal-Teke stands between 14 and 15 hands high and is dun, palomino, bay chestnut or grey in colour and have a sparse mane and tail. They are very long and slender through the frame with a finely modelled head and an unusually long and muscular neck. The shoulders are sloping, allowing a soft gait. The withers are high, and the back is long with a shallow ribcage. The legs are long and fine boned. The Akhal-Teke makes a good riding horse, having a brave but stubborn temperament. Traditionally they are used for racing, and are respected for their endurance.

BASHKIR

The Bashkir is an ancient breed of Russian pony from the Ural mountains. They are between 13 and 14 hands high, placid, good natured, and occur in bay, chestnut or palomino colour. The Bardigiano is a very hard and strong pony used for farm work, riding and meat production in Russia, and the milk is fermented to produce the local drink koumiss.

The Lokai is a Tajikistan breed of small riding horse. The Lokai grows to 14.3 hands high, with many individuals being smaller, and is grey, bay or chestnut in colour, sometimes black or palomino, often with a metallic sheen to the coat and often a particularly curly coat.

The Lundy is a recent breed of English pony established on the island of Lundy from New Forest pony mares and an Arab stallion. The Lundy stands 13 hands high, is generally good natured but spirited, and occurs mostly in dun, roan, bay, palomino or liver chestnut colours.

POITEVIN

The Poitevin or Mulassier is a French breed of heavy horse, renowned for being bad tempered, uncooperative, unattractive and poor workers. They do however produce excellent mules, and it is for this that they are bred. The Poitevin stands 16 hands high, is dun, grey, bay, black or palomino in colour and has coarse feathering to the legs. Poitevin mares are bred with Baudet de Poitou donkeys to produce Poitevin mules which are strong, tough, enduring and with a good disposition.

Danielle Steel's Palomino is a romance starring Lindsy Frost, Lee Horsley, Eva Marie Saint and Rod Taylor in a story based upon the novel by Danielle Steel about a photographer, who, upset by the breakdown of her marriage visits the ranch of a friend in California and falls for one of the men who works there. Danielle Steel's Palomino was directed by Michael Miller in 1991.
