ETHEL SMYTH

Ethel Mary Smyth was an English composer and suffragette. She was born in 1858 at London and died in 1944. She studied at Leipzig in 1877 and it was there that her string quartet attracted favourable attentions in 1884. She wrote several operas including 'Fantasio' written in 1898, 'Der Wald' written in 1901 and 'The Wreckers' written in 1906. She was created a DBE in 1922.

While at the Alto Reform School (having been convicted of breaking into cars), he formed a gospel quartet which was discovered by the musician Little Richard, and James Brown developed into 'The Godfather of Soul'.

LEOPOLD AUER

Leopold Auer was an American violinist. He was born in 1845 at Veszprem, Hungary and died in 1930. He studied in Budapest and Vienna and with the celebrated Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim in Germany. Through a friendship with the pianist and composer Anton Rubinstein, then director of the Conservatory of Saint Petersburg, Auer was appointed professor of violin at that institution in 1868. In 1883 he became a Russian subject. He was soloist to the tsar's court and founded the first important string quartet in Russia. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Auer gave concerts abroad. His first American recital was in 1924. In 1926 he became an American citizen. He was particularly known as a great violin teacher; his pupils included the American violinists Mischa Elman and Jascha Heifetz.

Kelly Rowland (real name Kelendria Trene Rowland) is an American singer and actress. She was born in 1981 at Atlanta, Georgia. She was one of the original quartet forming the pop band 'Destiny's Child', and also had a major role in the 2003 film 'Freddy vs Jason'.

In music, a septet is a piece for seven singers or players; or a group of seven such singers or players. Several different instrumental combinations are possible: Ludwig van Beethoven's Septet in E uses clarinet, bassoon, horn, violin, viola and double bass; Ravel's Introduction and Allegro, though not described as such, is in fact a septet for flute, clarinet, harp and string quartet. Other composers using this medium include Hummel, Spohr, and Schoenberg.
