A wild goose chase is a colloquial expression originally for an erratic course taken by someone followed by someone else, and now for a fruitless or hopeless quest. the expression comes from the difficulty experienced in catching a wild goose (properly a greylag goose).

Edwin Austin Abbey was an American painter and illustrator. He was born in 1852 at Philadelphia and died in 1911. He was the staff illustrator from 1871 at Harper's Weekly and in 1878 moved to London. He illustrated ' Selections from the Poetry of Robert Herrick', 'Old Songs', 'comedies of Shakespeare'. Between 1890 and 1902 he executed panels, illustrating the Quest of the Holy Grail, for Boston Public Library. In 1902 he painted a coronation portrait for Edward VII and in 1911 executed a group of murals at Pennsylvania State Capitol.

The Reverend Robert Stephen Hawker was an English poet and divine. He was born in 1805 and died in 1875. He was educated at Oxford and became vicar of Morwenstow, Cornwall. In Greek mythology the Argus was a beast and son of Arestor with a hundred eyes of which he could only close two at a time. He was placed by Juno to guard Io, whom Jupiter had changed into a heifer. But Mercury, who was sent to carry her off, managed to surprise and kill Argus whereupon Juno transferred his eyes to the tail of a peacock, her favourite bird. In Greek mythology, Argus was the name of the builder of the Argo, the ship that carried the hero Jason in his quest for the Golden Fleece

In Finnish mythology, Lemminkainen was the handsome son of the love-goddess Kyllihi. He was a shape-changer, trickster and seducer. He travelled the world looking for a wife, and used the quest as an excuse to have sex with every girl he met.

In Greek mythology, Perseus was son of Zeus by Danae, and was raised at the court of king Polydectes, at whose request he killed Medusa. Perseus found Medusa asleep and cut her head off. He married Andromeda, and upon his return used Medusa's head to turn Polydectes and his followers to stone, before presenting Medusa's head to Athene who had helped him in his quest to kill Medusa. While visiting Argos, Perseus accidentally killed Argos' mother. Perseus later became king of Tiryns and founded the dynasty of Perseidae.
