E. M. BAERLEIN

E M Baerlein was a British amateur rackets and tennis player for Eton College, Cambridge University, and Manchester. He was born in 1880 and died in 1971. He won the British amateur singles title at rackets nine times over a period of twenty years between 1903 and 1923.

JEM BELCHER

Jem Belcher was an English boxer. He was born in 1781 and died in 1811. He won the English bare-fist boxing championship in 1800 and in 1803 lost an eye playing rackets. He was the first to introduce refined footwork into boxing.

On The Fiddle is a comedy starring Alfred Lynch, Sean Connery, Cecil Parker, Stanley Holloway, Wilfrid Hyde White, Lance Percival and John Le Mesurier in a story about a confidence trickster who persuades a friend to join the air force with him to run money-making rackets. On The Fiddle was directed by Cyril Frankel in 1961.

BADMINTON

Badminton - named after a seat of the Duke of Beaufort, in Gloucestershire - is a game somewhat similar to lawn tennis, played on a rectangular court by two players, or two pairs of players, with light rackets used to volley a shuttlecock over a high net that divides the court in half. Badminton became popular in England as a game for men during the 1960's and developed from the earlier non-competitive game of battledore and shuttlecock.

The Londonderry Cup is one of the chief as well as the oldest tournaments in the squash rackets calendar. The cup was presented in 1934 by the International Sportsmen's Club and named after its then president, Lord Londonderry.
