Christopher Smart was an English poet. He was born in 1722 at Shipbourne, Kent and died in 1771. Educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge of which he became a fellow in 1745, he quickly established a reputation as a facile versifier, but through a liking for drinking and a lavish lifestyle he sank into a position of a book seller's general assistant in London before twice attending a lunatic asylum and finally dying in a debtors' prison.

Sir George Thomas Smart was an English musician. He was born in 1776 at London and died in 1867. He became a member of the Chapel Royal choir, and in 1791 a church organist at Hampstead Road. He played in a number of orchestras and in 1811 conducted a successful series of concerts in Dublin, where he was knighted by the lord-lieutenant. An original member of the Philharmonic Society, he conducted many of its concerts between 1813 and 1844, as well as musical festivals held all over the country, and taught music, among his pupils being Jenny Lind.

Henry Hawley Smart was an English soldier and novelist. He was born in 1833 at Dover and died in 1893. Educated privately, he entered the army in the 1st Regiment of Foot and saw action in the Crimean War and in India during the Indian Mutiny. Retiring from the army with the rank of captain, he devoted himself to writing, producing some thirty novels based around the themes of racing, hunting and military life. His first novel, 'Breezie Langton' was published in 1869.

Henry Thomas Smart was an English composer. He was born in 1813 at London and died in 1879. A nephew of George Smart, he studied for the army and the law before turning to music and becoming organist at Blackburn, Lancashire in 1831, remaining at the post until 1836 when he became organist to several London churches. Henry Smart also composed an opera, hymns and organ music.

John Rann, known as sixteen-string Jack, was an 18th century British highwayman. He was noted for his smart clothes, which included eight tags worn at each knee. He was hanged in 1774.

Thomas Sprat was an English poet, wit and bishop. He was born in 1635 at Beaminster and died in 1713. He was first known as a smart versifier and wit. At the restoration he developed into an ardent royalist, was ordained in 1661 and in 1669 appointed canon, in 1683 dean of Westminster and in 1684 bishop of Rochester. He assisted at the coronation of William and Mary. He wrote 'History of the Royal Society of London' published in 1667.
