The Sadler Papers are a collection of dispatches written by Sir Ralph Sadler, and sent from Scotland where he was working as a diplomat. The dispatches were edited by Sir Walter Scott in 1809, and provide a useful source of contemporary information on Scottish affairs during the reign of Queen Mary and the early years of the reign of James VI.

Sir Ralph Sadler was an English diplomatist. He was born in 1507 at Hackney and died in 1587. He worked in Scotland, and his dispatches, which were edited by Sir Walter Scott as the Sadler Papers in 1809, throw much light on Scottish affairs during the reign of Queen Mary and the early years of the reign of James VI.

Samuel Phelps was an English actor. He was born in 1804 at Devonport and died in 1878. He made his debut playing Shylock at London in 1837. Along with Thomas Greenwood and Mrs Warner he opened a small theatre at Sadler' s Wells in 1844, and for nearly twenty years successfully appeared there. His aim was to produce all Shakespeare's plays, and he actually did present thirty-four of them. He was an excellent all-round actor, primarily plying tragedy, but excellent as a comedian also.
