The Strand Magazine was founded in 1891 by Sir George Newnes and was immediately popular not least for its Sherlock Holmes stories which it carried written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Ralph Allen was an English celebrated philanthropist. He was born in 1694 and died in 1764. A friend of Pope, Fielding, and the elder Pitt, he lived mostly at Bath, where he made a large income as farmer of a system of posts and as owner of quarries. He was the prototype of Squire Allworthy in Fielding's novel Tom Jones; and after the novelist's death he took charge of his family. Pope, who received many kindnesses at his hands, referred to him in the lines: Let humble Allen, with an awkward shame, Do good by stealth, and blush to find it fame. With Pitt he was on intimate terms, and left him 1000 pounds by will. Hurd, Sherlock, and Warburton were also his friends.

Basil Rathbone (real name Philip St John Basil Rathbone) was a South African born English actor. He was born in 1892 at Johannesburg and died in 1967 of a heart attack. He appeared as the character 'Sherlock Holmes' in fourteen 'Sherlock Holmes' films, and played a comedy cameo role in the 1943 film 'Crazy House'.

Nigel Bruce (real name William Nigel Bruce) was a Mexican-born British actor. He was born in 1895 and died in 1953 of a heart attack. He is best known for his portrayal of 'Doctor Watson' in the Sherlock Holmes films of the 1930s and 1940s.

His first major role cam co-starring in the 1943 film 'Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon', his last role was playing Dr Joe Prescott from 1970 until 1973 in the television series 'Where the Heart is".

Sherlock by Gulf Sierra is a text comparison utility that allows you to compares two ASCII files line by line. It displays five lines from each file in separate windows. You may scroll either or both files passed the mismatch to put them in sync and continue. Either file can be automatically scanned to locate a line matching the line selected in the other file. Sherlock contains features for searching, ignoring case, spaces, tabs, jumping around the files and copying lines to a printer. This is a useful tool for programmers and writers.

Pursuit To Algiers is a Sherlock Holmes crime mystery starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce in a story about the London privated detective being asked by the police to guard a foreign prince who must return home following the death of his father.
