ARIZONA MOUNTAIN KINGSNAKE

The Arizona Mountain Kingsnake (Lampropeltis pyromelana pyromelana) is a subspecies of the Utah Mountain Kingsnake found in Chihuahua and Sonora in Mexico where they grow to 107 cm in length and are distinguished by more than forty narrow white rings encircling the body. The head is black in colour with a white or pale yellow coloured snout with dark mottling. Chihuahuas are sprightly dogs, energetic, leaping rapidly about and inquisitive with fine hearing.

JACK-IN-THE-BOX

Jack-in-the-box (Hernandia Sonora) is a tree of the Hernandia genus. It is so named because of the noise the wind makes whistling through its persistent involucels.

PLUTARCO CALLES

Plutarco Elias Calles was a Mexican politician. He was born in 1877 at Guaymas, Sonora and died in 1945. He took part in the 1910 revolution against Porfirio Diaz and in 1917 became Governor of Sonora until 1919. Secretary of the Interior from 1920 to 1924 he became President of Mexico in 1924 until in 1928 he retired to become a landowner. In 1929 he founded the National Revolutionary Party, through he which he controlled subsequent Mexican presidents until he was exiled to the USA in 1936, being allowed to return in 1941.

SERES

The Seres or Seri are a tribe of Mexican Indians formerly living in Sonora. The first study of them was undertaken in 1895 by M'Gee who described them, rather unscientifically, as 'the most debased of all the North American aborigines'.

WILLIAM WALKER

William Walker was an American adventurer. He was born in 1834 and died in 1860. He organized an unsuccessful expedition in 1853 for the conquest of the State of Sonora, Mexico. In 1855 he was induced to aid the 'Liberal' party in the Nicaragua troubles. He gained a victory at La Virgen, and took possession of Granada. He became Secretary of War and commander-in-chief. He gained undisputed control of Nicaragua and caused himself to be elected President in 1856. His government was recognized by the United States. He was defeated in an insurrection in 1857. He made two subsequent attempts to overthrow governments in Central America, in one of which he was captured and shot.
