DOMINATRIX

A dominatrix is a woman who plays the dominant role in sex games, typically those of a bondage, sado-masochistic or slave and master variety. Usually, a dominatrix is depicted in black leather, frequently with a military-style peaked cap, thigh length, stiletto heeled boots and a whip, and the sex games are of a sado-masochistic nature, the other participant or participants being known as submissives or 'subs', and being subjected to degrees of humiliation or ordering about by the dominatrix.

The dominatrix is a popular figure in sex games, particularly among executive business men who find their daily lives an endless stress of decision making, and appreciate having the responsibility for making decisions taken away from them for a short while during an effective role-reversal recreation.

Sex games involving the dominatrix traverse the spectrum of sado-masochism and slave-master sex from the benign - such as being ordered which sexual positions to adopt, through body worship (being instructed to kiss the dominatrix feet and other parts of the body), through the more strict corporal punishment involving spanking, caning, whipping etc and also varying levels of humiliation. SADO-MASOCHISM

Sado-masochism is a form of sexual activity involving actual or simulated pain so as to enhance sexual pleasure. Various forms are common, including at the gentle end of the spectrum back scratching during intercourse, through corporal punishment (spanking) and flagellation, ranging to the use of devices such as nipple clamps, whips, and more severe forms of pain. It should be emphasised that the whole point of sado-masochism is not of pain, but of pleasure for all (usually two) parties involved. The popular misconception that sado-masochism is about hurting one's partner is a naive fallacy. Rather, due to the complex nature of the relationship between pain and pleasure centres in the brain, many people find a little pain during sexual intercourse enhances their pleasure - for example having their back scratched. Generally, parties involved in sado-masochistic sexual activities enjoy both the dominant and receptive roles, and may also partake of other associated sexual activities such as bondage, slave and master games, humiliation and so on. Flagellation as a means of sexual activity, either solo for masturbation or with other parties has been practised for thousands of years, and was formerly (and may still be) very popular with religious recluses and monks. Under current UK law, any form of sado-masochistic sexual activity partaken of between consenting adults, in private or otherwise is illegal, and constitutes assault (the law stating that one cannot consent to assault unless in a sports scenario, such as boxing).

URANUS

Uranus is one of the outer planets of the solar system. It was discovered on March the 13th, 1781, by Sir William Herschel - and named Georgium Sidus - who also detected, on January the 11th, 1787, two of the Uranian satellites, Oberon and Titania. The mean distance of the planet from the sun is 1,782,000,000 miles, its period of revolution round the sun 84 years, its diameter 31,700 m., and though sixty-four times as big as the earth it is only fifteen times as heavy. Its period of rotation on its own axis is uncertain. Certain markings on its disk caused Brenner in 1896 to deduce a period of 8 hours 27 mins. Other estimates make the period approximately ten hours. Two further satellites have been discovered, Ariel and Umbriel, both by Lassell in 1851. The satellites are remarkable for revolving in a plane nearly at right angles to the orbit of the planet, and for having a retrograde motion. The spectrum of the planet indicates that the atmosphere contains a quantity of free hydrogen, and it is probable that the planet is still at a high temperature. Due to the irregularities in the orbit of Uranus, the remarkable mathematical and consequent telescopic discovery of Neptune was made.

XERIS

Xeris is a genus of Horntail (Siricidea). Xeris spectrum is a mostly black species with yellow spots on the sides of the prothorax, and partly yellowish-red legs. The female is armed with a long ovipositor, but is actually harmless to man, the ovipostor serving only for laying eggs. Xeris spectrum is distributed over most of Europe, Siberia, China and Japan and is between 15 and 30 mm long. They are mostly found in pine woods where the adults fly on warm, sunny days. The larvae feed on the cellulose of wood, taking between two and three years to develop, and are often introduced into buildings through timber.

GEORGE STOKES

Sir George Gabriel Stokes was an Irish mathematician and physicist. He was born in 1819 at Skreen and died in 1903. It is to Sir George Stokes that the modern theory of viscous fluids and the discovery that rays beyond the violet end of the spectrum produce fluorescence in certain substances is due.

JOSEPH VON FRAUNHOFER

Joseph Von Fraunhofer was a German physicist. He was born in 1787 at Strasbourg and died in 1826. He ultimately became a partner in a manufactory of optical instruments at Munich. His many improvements in glass-making, in optical instruments, and in the polishing of lenses, have been eclipsed by his investigation of the innumerable dark fixed lines in the solar spectrum, known as Fraunhofer's Lines. The importance of this discovery can scarcely be overestimated. It led to the invention and use of the spectroscope, to the science of spectroscopy, and to all our present knowledge of solar and stellar chemistry.

ROBERT BUNSEN

Robert Bunsen was a German chemist. He was born in 1811 at Gottingen and died in 1899. He studied at Gottingen University, and at Paris, Berlin, and Vienna; and was appointed professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Gassel in 1836; at the University of Marburg in 1838, at Breslau in 1851, and finally professor of Experimental Chemistry at Heidelberg in 1852. Among his many discoveries and inventions are the production of magnesium in quantities, magnesium light, spectrum analysis, the Bunsen burner, etc.

Sir William de Wiveleslie Abney was an English chemist and physicist. He was born in 1843 at Derby and died in 1920. After a career in the Royal Engineers he became a pioneer in colour photography and printing and carried out important work in the field of spectrum analysis.
