Gala is a variety of apple that was crossed in New Zealand and released in 1960. Its parents are Kidd's Orange Red and Golden Delicious. It was taken to the USA in 1972 by Stark Brothers Nurseries & Orchards Co. of Louisiana, Missouri. In recent years, buoyed by the success of Gala imports from New Zealand, American growers have become enthusiastic about the variety. It is a relatively early apple that has a snappy zest over a mellow sweetness. Its yellowish, juicy flesh is very firm. The original Galas retained the external colour from the Kidd's side, but some mutations found recently show a complete red colour. Galas are noted for their eating quality out of hand.

Sir Edward Richard George Heath (Ted Heath) was an English politician. He was born in 1916 at Broadstairs, Kent and died in 2005. He entered parliament in 1950 and became leader of the Conservative party and in 1970 became Prime Minister. He was ousted from leadership of the Conservative party in 1975 by Margaret Thatcher following widespread industrial disputes across the country, and particularly dissatisfaction among the coal miners. After his removal as leader of the Conservative Party the Conservative Party became far more dictatorial and moralist. Until the day he died, Edward Heath opposed the extreme and oppressive policies of the Thatcherite Conservatives. He is remembered as the British Prime Minister who negotiated Britain's entry into the European Common Market, and as an international statesman who successfully negotiated the release of British prisoners held in Iraq following the Gulf War - a position that was in stark contrast to the swaggering gun-ho posture of his successors.

John Stark was an American soldier. He was born in 1728 at New Hampshire and died in 1822. He was a hero of the Indian border warfare, and was at one time captured. He fought in the French and Indian War, and was active in the American Revolution, being one of the principal leaders at Bunker Hill. He served in Canada, at Trenton and Princeton, and resigned in 1777. But the danger of Burgoyne's invasion called out the New Hampshire militia, and they demanded John Stark as a commander. At Bennington, on August the 16th, 1777, John Stark overthrew the Hessian detachment, and in this way powerfully contributed to the catastrophe of Saratoga. He was made a brigadier-general, and served until the close of, the war.

The Stark Effect is the change produced by a strong electrostatic field in the spectrum emitted by a gas subjected to an electric discharge in a highly exhausted tube. The light emitted by the atoms of the gas is due to the motion of electrons and the motion of these is disturbed when they are subjected either to a magnetic field or to an electric field, the former case being that of the Zeeman effect. The Stark effect was discovered in 1913 by Stark.
