CORNELIUS VANDERBILT

Cornelius Vanderbilt (Commodore Vanderbilt) was an American capitalist. He was born in 1794 and died in 1877. The son of a small farmer he began in business at the age of sixteen by ferrying passengers and goods between New York and Staten Island. In 1851 he established a steamship line between New York and California via Nicaragua. In 1855 he established a line between New York and Havre. In 1857 he turned his attention to railways, and became one of the foremost 'railroad kings' in America. In 1867 becoming president of the New York Central Railway. He founded Vanderbilt University at Nashville, Tennessee.

JOAN BAEZ

Joan Baez is an American professional folksinger. She was Born in 1941 at Staten Island. She studied at Boston University, but left to sing in Boston coffee houses. Her clear soprano voice and simple, effective guitar accompaniments created a distinctive style that became increasingly popular after her Newport Folk Festival appearance in 1959 and her recording debut in 1960. Baez worked for civil rights, in the antiwar movement, and for human rights in south-east Asia, both through her singing and by founding Humanitas, an international human rights organization, and the Institute for the Study of Non-Violence.

JOHN SULLIVAN

John Sullivan was an American soldier and politician. He was born in 1740 at Maine and died in 1795. He was a major in the Maine militia before the American War of Independence, and was appointed brigadier-general in 1775. he was engaged in the siege of Boston and in Canada in the unsuccessful attack of Three Rivers. He became a major general in 1776, and was one of the principal commanders in the Battle of Long Island and in the autumn campaign of 1776 fought at Trenton and Princeton, and made a raid on Staten Island. He led the right flank at Brandywine and Germantown, and won the Battle of Butts Hill in Rhode Island in 1778. In 1779 he ravaged the country of the Six Nations. He served in Congress, and was a Federalist governor of New Hampshire from 1789 until 1790.

WILLIAM H. VANDERBILT

William Henry Vanderbilt was an American businessman. He was born in 1821 at New Jersey and died in 1885. The son of Cornelius Vanderbilt, he became clerk in a New York bank in 1839, but took to farming in Staten Island. There he became president of the Staten Island Railroad, and made it such a success that he was taken into partnership by his father, on whose death, in 1877, he became president of the New York Central and Hudson Railroads. By his untiring energy and unfailing business acumen, he obtained control of other important systemsand at his death was probably the richest man in America.


William H Vanderbilt was an American politician. He was a Republican governor of Rhode Island from 1939 until 1941.

STATEN ISLAND

Staten Island is an island of New York, USA. It was bought from the Indians by Michael Pauw in 1631 and later transferred to the Dutch West India Company. It was settled by colonists under De Vries in 1637, and two years later burned and ravaged by the Raritan Indians. The West India Company acquired the patroon titles on the island, but in 1665 it was confiscated by the Duke of York.
