A Blue-stocking was a literary lady. The term was applied around the time of Dr Johnson when ladies would hold conversation with distinguished literary men. One of the men, Benjamin Stillingfleet, always wore blue stockings and his conversation was so prized at the meetings that in his absence the ladies would remark, 'we can do nothing without the blue-stockings', and hence the meetings became known as blue-stocking clubs, and the ladies who attended them as blue-stockings.

In Italian mythology, Befana is the good-fairy who fills children's Christmas stockings with toys while they sleep on Twelfth Night. According to Legeb, Befana was too busy with her housework to look after the three Kings when they went to offer their gifts to the baby Jesus, and said she would wait to see them on their return. However, they went another way and now every Twelfth Night Befana watches out for the three Kings.

Silk Stockings is a comedy musical starring Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse and Janis Paige in a musical remake of 'Ninotchka' in which three bumbling Soviet agents try to retrieve a straying Soviet composer from Paris and the beautiful agent sent to help them who becomes seduced by the decadent West. Silk Stockings was directed by Rouben Mamoulian in 1957.

The French maid is a fantasy outfit based upon the traditional maid's uniform of a short, black skirt and matching black blouse with white lace trim and a white lace apron. The fantasy French maid's outfit varies enormously, but is basically comprised of a black skirt and blouse coupled with white lace trimmings of an apron and fishnet stockings.
