Tobias George Smollett was a Scottish novelist. He was born in 1721 at Dalquhurne and died in 1771. Educated at Dumbarton and Glasgow University, he trained as a doctor, serving an apprenticeship with a Glasgow surgeon, and in 1739 travelled to London where he accepted a post as surgeon's mate in the navy, subsequently taking part in the Cartagena expedition of 1740 - 1741. Leaving the navy, he worked as a doctor in London, but a lack of income meant he took to writing, his first novel 'Roderick Random' published in 1748 proving an instant success and through its realistic and convincing image of the navy - based upon his own experiences therein - caused indignation which led to a drastic reform in the service. Another successful novel he wrote was 'Peregrine Pickle' published in 1751, which again was noted for its often course humour.

Objective Burma is a Second World War action drama starring Errol Flynn, James Brown, William Prince, George Tobias and Henry Hull in a story about a group of American soldiers parachuting into Japanese-occupied Burma during the Second World War with a mission to destroy a radar station. Objective Burma was directed by Raoul Walsh in 1945. Objective Burma is notorious on two counts: firstly it is the first film to depict a character pulling a grenade pin out with his teeth - something no soldier ever does - and secondly in one scene one of the 'dead' Japanese soldiers moves his foot from having the heel pointing outwards to a more comfortable position pointing inwards.
