SHOLEM ALEICHEM

Sholem Aleichem is the pen name of the Ukrainian writer Solomon Rabinowitz. He was born in 1859 and died in 1916. A former rabbi, he left Russia in 1905 and travelled to the USA and Switzerland. The film Fiddler on the Roof is based on his works about small east European Jewish towns.

VASILY SOKOLOVSKY

Vasily Sokolovsky was a Soviet general. He was born in 1897 and died in 1968. During the Second World War he was Chief of Staff to the West Front Army from 1941, he took command of it in 1943, and led the counteroffensive after the Battle of Kursk and liberated Smolensk. His progress then slowed and he was removed from command and became Chief of Staff to the 1st Ukrainian Front. In 1945 he became Deputy Commander of the 1st Byelorussian Front for the attack on Berlin, captured the Fuhrerbunker, and verified Hitler's corpse from dental records. After the war he became commander in chief of Soviet Forces in Germany.

ISO 8859-5 is a computer character set of Cyrillic letters purporting to support Bulgarian, Byelorussian, Macedonian, Russian, Serbian and Ukrainian. However, it lacks the Ukrainian ghe with a down stroke, and so KOI8-R is generally more popular.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

Fiddler On The Roof is a musical comedy starring Topol, Norma Crane, Leonard Frey and Molly Picon in a story about a poor Ukrainian milkman determined to find good husbands for his five daughters. Fiddler On The Roof was directed by Norman Jewison in 1971.

MOLDOVA

The Republic of Moldova (Moldavia) is a country in eastern Europe. The language is Romanian, Ukrainian and Russian. The area of Moldova was known as Bessarabia from the 10th to the 12 centuries when the area was ruled by the Kiev Rus and from the 15th century when it was a Romanian principality within the Ottoman Empire the area was known as Moldavia. In 1812 the area was ceeded to Russia. In 1917, during the Russian revolution an independent Bessarabian republic was declared, only for the area to be invaded by the Bolsheviks in 1918 and the region to become part of the kingdom of Romania. In 1944 the USSR invaded and took control of the area naming it the Moldavian Soviet Republic. Following the dissolution of the USSR in 1991 the area became independent Moldova..

Voroshilovgrad is an industrial city in the Ukrainian. Voroshilovgrad was formerly known as Lugansk until 1935, it was renamed in honour of the Soviet military and political leader Marshal Voroshilov.
