A diaeresis is a separation of one syllable into two, and also the name of the two dots, similar to an umlaut, set above the second of two adjacent vowels in a word to show that both are to be pronounced separately. Research Diaeresis
An umlaut is a mark of two dots side-by-side placed over a vowel in some languages - escpecially characteristic of the Teutonic fanily - such as German, indicating modification in the quality of the vowel. The term was invented by the German philologist J Grimm. Research Umlaut
