UNCLE TOM'S CABIN

Uncle Tom's Cabin was a story by Mrs H. Beecher-Stowe published in portions in a newspaper in 1850 and then in a complete form in 1852. The story, based on the real-life events of Josiah Henson who recounted his tale to Mrs Beecher-Stowe, set forth the evils of slavery and was an enormous seller and contributed greatly to the abolition of slavery in Britain. The hero of the story, Uncle Tom, is a black slave noted for his fidelity, piety and hardwork who is sold and has to submit to terrible cruelty.

HARRIET STOWE

Harriet Elizabeth Stowe (born Harriet Elizabeth Beecher) was an American author and abolitionist. She was born in 1811 at Litchfield, Connecticut and died in 1896. Educated at Litchfield Academy and at Hartford in 1836 she married the anti-slavery advocate Calvin Stowe. She is best known for her novel 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' which was first serialised in 'The National Era' of Washington between 1851 and 1852 and published in book form in Boston in 1852, in which she exposed slavery, and thereby greatly helped in the abolition of slavery in the USA.

JOSIAH HENSON

Josiah Henson was an American Negro slave. He was born in 1787 and died in 1881. The classic book 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' was based upon the life of Josiah Henson who fled slavery in Maryland and escaped to Canada where he became a church pastor.
