JACQUES HALEVY

Jacques Francois Fromental Halevy was a Jewish French composer. He was born in 1799 at Paris and died in 1862. Hestudied at the conservatory under Lambert and Cherubini, and was sent to Italy to finish his musical education. Here he wrote his first two operas Les Bohemiennes and Pygmalion. The first of his pieces performed was a little comic opera, L'Artisan, given at the Theatre Feydau in Paris, in 1827. His chef d'oeuvre, La Juive, appeared in 1835, and rapidly obtained a European celebrity. Among his other works are L'Eclaire, Guido et Ginevra, La Reine de Chypre, Le Val d'Andorre, La Fee aux Roses. He was a cultivated and scholarly composer but without much genius.

MILARITE

Milarite is a rare mineral containing a large number of metals first identified in 1873 and named after Val Milar in Switzerland. Milarite is a hydrated silicate of potassium, calcium, aluminium and beryllium and is a member of the osumilite group. Crystals of milarite are hexagonal and often have six-sided, prismatic shapes, often very small and coloured green or yellow. Milarite is brittle and has no cleavage and has a relative hardness of 5.5 to 6.

The Aichi D3A (Val) was a Japanese two-seat carrier or land-based dive-bomber aircraft of the Second World War. The D3A1 was powered by a Mitsubishi Kinsei 44 14-cylinder radial piston engine delivering 1070 hp and providing a top speed of 385 kmh and a range of 1470 km. The D3A1 was armed with two 7.7 mm fixed, forward firing Type 97 machine-guns and a Type 92 trainable machine-gun in the rear cockpit and 370 kg of bombs carried under the wings and fuselage. The Japanese navy used D3A aircraft in the attack on Pear Harbour.
