The velvet scoter (Melanitta fusca) is a migrant duck, sometimes visiting Britain during winter. The velvet scoter is larger than the common scoter, about 55 centimetres long, the male having mainly black plumage with a white patch under the eye and a yellow patch on the bill. The female is brownish with pale patches at the base of the bill and on the cheek. Both sexes have a distinctive white patch on the wing. Research Velvet Scoter
