War driving is the practice of driving around in a vehicle or parking at interesting places, while equipped with wireless devices and related tools, with the goal of discovering easy-to-get-into wireless networks for hacking. Typical equipment used for war driving includes a laptop computer or a PDA with a wireless card, a GPS (satellite bagiation system), and a high-gain aerial. The typical choice of operating system for war driving - and other hacking - is Linux where open source sniffers such as Kismet and WEP crackers like AirSnort are easily available. In order to access a wireless network, the hacker has to be within range of the wirelss signal. With a typical 30mW wireless card intended for a laptop computer, the range is about 100 meters or 300 feet, but this reduces drastically due to the presence of buildings. Research War Driving
