HENRY SLOCUM

Henry Warner Slocum was an American soldier. He was born in 1827 at Delphi, New York and died in 1894. Educated at the military academy at West Point he left the army in 1856 and practised as a lawyer, but rejoined the army on the outbreak of the American Civil War. During the American Civil War he was present at both the Battles of Bull Run, Gaine's Mill, Antietam, Chancellorsville and at Gettysburg, and commanded the left wing on Sherman's famous march to the sea. In 1865 he settled at Brooklyn as a practising lawyer, also taking an active role in politics and municipal affairs.

SETH WARNER

Seth Warner was an American soldier. He was born in 1743 at Vermont and died in 1784. He was a leader of the inhabitants of the New Hampshire Grants in the conflicts of jurisdiction with the New York authorities, by whom he was outlawed. He was second in command at Ticonderoga. He captured Crown Point. He participated in Montgomery's campaign in Canada. He commanded at Hubbardston and was active at Bennington. He retired in 1782 on account of ill health.

Susan Warner was an American author. She was born in 1819 and died in 1885. Under the pseudonym of Elizabeth Wetherell she wrote a series of tales of domestic life including 'The Wide, Wide World'.

ALAN HALE

Alan Hale (real name Rufus Alan McKahan) was an American actor and director. He was born in 1892 at Washington DC and died in 1950. He decided on a film career after his attempt at becoming an opera singer didn't work. He quickly became much in demand as a supporting actor, and starred in several productions, as well as directing others for the producer Cecil B DeMille. With the advent of sound, he played leads in a few films, but settled down into a career as a character actor. He was one of the featured members of what became known as the Warner Brothers Stock Co., a core of character actors and actresses who appeared in scores of Warner Bros. films of the 1930s and 1940s. Hale's best known role is probably in the 1939 'The Adventures of Robin Hood', one of several films he made with his friend Errol Flynn, in which he played Little John, a role he played on two other occasions - in the 1922 'Robin Hood' and the 1951 'Rogues of Sherwood Forest'.

AL JOLSON

Al Jolson (real name Asa Yoelson) was a Lithuanian actor. He was born in 1886 and died in 1950. Al Jolson went to the USA as a child, against his father's wishes, and starred in minstrel shows before becoming a singing star. Warner Brothers decided to star him in their first partly-talking-picture, the 1927 'The Jazz Singer' At the end of the 1930s Al Jolson's film career was over. This and the divorce from his wife, Ruby Keeler, had a negative influence on Al Jolson's health. During the Second World War Al Jolson sung for the American Military Forces like many other entertainers.

H B Warner was an English actor. He was born in 1876 at London and died in 1958. His real name was Henry Byron Charles Stewart Warner-Lickford. He made his stage debut at the age of seven, in his father's theater. After studying medicine for a few years, he went back to the theater and spent several years gracing the stage in both England and America, before entering silent films in 1914 as the leading man he was trained to be.

Jack Warner was an English actor. He was born in 1896 at London and died in 1981 of pneumonia. He is best remembered for his starring role as George Dixon in the television series Dixon of Dock Green that followed the 1950 film The Blue Lamp in which he also starred as police constable George Dixon.

James Dean (real name James Byron) was an American actor. He was born in 1931 and died in 1955 in a car crash. His moody performances and early death made him a lasting symbol of youthful rebelion. After studying at the University of California, he appeared in a few small bit parts before being signed by Warner Brothers in 1954. Thereafter he achieved fame starring in the 1955 'East of Eden', the 1955 'Rebel Without a Cause' and the 1956 ' Giant'.
