The Himyarites are a race or group of races in Arabia, regarded as descendants of Himyar, one of the mythical ancestors of the Arabs. According to tradition they became the dominant race in Yemen about 3000 years before Mohammed, and spread to the Euphrates on the one hand and Abyssinia on the other. Their most successful period appears to have been from about 100 BC until 629 AD, when they succumbed to Mohammedanism. The Himyaritic language, not now spoken, formed, with the Arabic and Ethiopia, the southern branch of the Semitic family of tongues. During the 19th century hundreds of Himyaritic inscriptions were collected, and deciphered by means of alphabets with the corresponding Arabic letters which had been preserved. The Mahrah tribes of south Arabia are the direct descendants of the ancient Himyarites.

Osman Nuri Pasha was a Turkish field-marshal. He was born in 1832 at Tokat and died in 1900. He served in the Crimea, Crete, Yemen and in 1876 in the Serbian war; but is best remembered for his gallant defence of Plevna against the Russians in 1877. He was Turkish minister of war from 1878 to 1885 and grand marshal of the palace until his death.

The So San is a North Korean freighter. She was in the news in December, 2002, when she was seized in the Arabian Sea by the Navarra, a Spanish Navy frigate acting under a request from the USA, and her cargo of Scud missiles seized. The cargo, which was a legitimate shipment to Yemen, was subsequently returned after protests from the Yemeni government over the act of piracy.

Aden is the commercial capital of the Republic of Yemen. It is a port on the Gulf of Aden at the entrance to the Red Sea, and was the capital of the former country of Aden and the former country of South Yemen.
