Zachariah Chandler was an American politician. He was born in 1813 at Michigan and died in 1879. He removed from New Hampshire to Detroit in 1833 and engaged in the dry-goods business, in which he was successful. He became a prominentWhig and a director of the 'underground railroad'. He was elected to the US Senate to succeed General Cass in 1857, and remained in that post until 1874, when he was appointed Secretary of the Interior by Grant.
