ProbertThe name Probert is thought to be the sixth most popular family name in Wales, and is derived from the Welsh ap Robat (in English, son of Robert). The name is thus equivalent to the English Robertson and Scottish MacRobert. The name of Probert first occurs widely following the Norman conquest during the early mediaeval period, and the name Robat probably described some well-known and sensible man, thus ap Robat, naming a man as the son of a well-known and sensible man. What is less well known, and less publicised, is that the family of Probert have an official coat of arms, and also a tartan - yes the Welsh wear cilts (notice the difference in spelling to the more familiar Scottish kilt. The Welsh wool is worsted and thus softer and far gentler than the Scottish) complete with ysgrepan (a Welsh form of the Scottish sporron).
